Class/Course Information

All students will be expected to watch a live theatrical performance each semester (the date is in Google Classroom and Skyward), and turn in a written critique of the technical elements.

Technical Theatre I is an introductory course, letting students experience a variety of production aspects: scenic construction, lighting, sound, makeup, painting design, and facility management.  The students become responsible for assisting in the care and maintenance of the facility and in the preparations for events. The goal for Technical Theatre I students is to give them a greater awareness and appreciation for all the skill and effort that goes into producing live performances of all kinds!

Technical Theatre II-IV continues the student's experience with greater involvement in performances, design, hosting of events and producing materials for design competitions like UIL, ITS and TETA's Designfest.  Students are given the tools to grow in specialization, and are supported if they still want to try everything!  Our goal is for advanced students to produce a quality product that they can take pride in, skills that will continue to serve them, and confidence in their abilities.

Things to be aware of

  • All students should expect to get dirty and a lot of manual labor.
  • You WILL be expected to read full plays!
  • This is not your normal classroom- we work with power tools, electricity, heights, and many other risks and dangers not found in most classrooms.  Take your safety and the safety of those around you SERIOUSLY.
  • A change of clothes is suggested - we get dirty around here.
  • We're here at GHS to help you graduate and move on to the next stage in your life- that requires passing ALL your classes.  I will support your other teachers.
  • Good work shoes are necessary.
  • You will be expected to think- reading, math, geometry, history are all tools of this trade.
  • A positive attitude and a willingness to work is more useful than amazing skills in a tech who refuses to work

Employment:
Students ages 16+ can apply to work outside rental events for pay $15/hr. complete the CONTRACTED SERVICES FINE ARTS 20-21 application at /Page/522 .  Once completed, the student will receive an email stating thank you for completing your application- the student MUST INFORM ME for the process to proceed.
Please note- there are NO guaranteed hours.  I try to give equal opportunity to all when the event allows it, but many events require specific skills of a certain level.

My Education & Teaching Background

I graduated from Southwestern University with a BFA in Theatre and a teaching certificate- having done my student teaching here at GHS in 1994! I then taught in Klein and Round Rock ISDs, briefly took a hiatus to work on the development of Disney's World of Color and Seaworld San Diego's Blue Horizon's shows, and returned home to GHS!
